WrestleMania II

7 April 1986

Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, New York

The merits of this memorable boxing match have been debated for over three decades. Whether it was an entertaining spectacle to attract casual viewers, or a waste of time stealing the space of a deserving wrestler? The one area of debate left is whether it was more bizarre to bring boxing into the wrestling ring or acerbic red-carpet comedian Joan Rivers?

The match was billed as a “scheduled ten rounds of boxing”, however, no fan believed this would go the distance, particularly with Roddy Piper in the mix. The match itself was a masterclass in hype, elaborate entrances, bulky entourages, and celebrities from the zeitgeist of late ‘80s America. It remains a curiosity in WrestleMania history, and best appreciated for the superb heel work of Piper, which showcased the storytelling aspects of professional wrestling.

The DQ:

Roddy Piper pushed the referee down and hit a bodyslam on Mr T, which triggered the disqualification. Both men brawled on the mat as the ring filled with officials and managers separating both competitors. Piper left raising his arms unfazed by the DQ announcement.
