10 Ways Paul Heyman's Smackdown Was The Best Ever

4. Rising Stars

Speaking of younger, hungrier talent... During Heyman's tenure as head writer of Smackdown, he gave opportunities to OVW graduates Rico Constantino, John Cena, Batista and Randy Orton. Although Orton and Batista was transferred over to Raw after a short time on the blue brand, Cena really flourished on the supposed 'B' show. A lot of that had to do with Heyman giving him a chance. His debut, in which he was allowed to look competitive against Kurt Angle, was certainly memorable and put Cena on the map. In the coming weeks and months he could be found teaming with Rey Mysterio and Edge, before debuting his 'Doctor of Thuganomics' gimmick in late 2002. Heyman gave these guys a shot, attempting to hide their negatives and accentuate their positives. Smackdown during this period was so much fun to watch because you never knew which future prospect was going to show up.
