4. "Just watchin' my stories..."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihtyzkoHpOA "In order to do wrestling right, it's a story. Okay, so you gotta start at the beginning, you gotta build the belief, you gotta build the story, and you gotta have an ending." David Manning, WCCW referee and booker, Heroes of World Class Wrestling is often touted as a male soap opera, and WCCW had the sudsiest storylines of the era. The obvious example is the Von Erich/Freebird feud. Some of the show's "subplots," however, are every bit as memorable. Freebird Buddy Roberts's hair-vs-hair war against "Iceman" King Parsons ended up with a bald, humiliated Roberts wearing a wig. "Gorgeous" Jimmy Garvin lost a match to David Von Erich, and wound up doing David's chores on the family ranch. "Gentleman" Chris Adams, one of the most beloved babyfaces in the promotion, turned on the Von Erichs with a karate kick to Kevin's face. Fritz would get in on the action if his boys were in trouble. Avenging Kerry's head injury at the hands of Terry Gordy, he slammed a cage door on Gordy's head, echoing his Sheriff Adkisson's Old Testament sense of justice. If some of these angles sound a bit familiar, you've probably been watching wrestling for the past thirty years. From Shawn Michaels turning on Marty Jannetty to Vince McMahon having his head shaved, this kind of stuff has been going on since WCCW's heyday.
