10 Weirdest UFC Fighting Styles

9. Scientific Aggressive Fighting Technology Of America (S.A.F.T.A.)

Lew Hicks is responsible for that eye catching name and Jon Hess brought it to the mainstream.

But what the hell is S.A.F.T.A.?

At UFC 5 in 1995, we stole our first glimpse of what Hess was selling. The man was in the shape of his life, though the announcers claimed "you may not believe it by the looks of him". At 6'7" and 295lbs, Hess used military techniques to disarm and vanquish his foes.

It looked as though Hess wanted to use his opponent's momentum against them in an effort to throw them off-balance and discombobulate them.

Hicks developed the art as a form of self-defence for those in the military and as a weapon for those who needed to protect themselves on the street. The strikes were efficient and direct - aiming for the solar plexus and maximum neck damage - and judo throws were incorporated too.

Hess would end his MMA career after two fights with a 1-1 record. S.A.F.T.A. has a 50/50 record in MMA as it stands, so maybe it's worth another punt?
