10 Weirdest Wrestling Characters (That Actually Worked)
3. Kane
After failing to draw as an evil dentist and, um, Diesel (no, really), Glen Jacobs career appeared to be going down faster than Monica Lewinski at an election rally. It really wasnt his fault, Jacobs had an impressive physique, he was strong as a bull elephant and he could work exceptionally well. In fact, for a man of his size and build, Jacobs is actually a physical marvel in the ring. Still, a succession of crappy gimmicks and terrible booking scenarios had led Jacobs absolutely nowhere... ...Until Kane came along, that is. Combining Jacobs physical gifts with WWE writer Vince Russos love of daytime TV and Jim Cornettes interest in teen slasher movies, Kane, ostensibly the evil brother of The Undertaker, fused a (literally) incendiary entrance package with a cool costume and a terrifying presence in the ring, to great effect. Both the character, and his backstory, demanded a sustained level of suspension of disbelief from the crowd, but WWE obviously did something right, because Kanes popularity spread like, um...wildfire. Also, to add one final point, did you know that The Undertakers original name was Kane The Undertaker? True story.
I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction.
I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long!
If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it).
I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work.
Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that!
Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?)
