10 Weirdest Wrestling Cults Ever
5. The Truth Commission
Though WWE once flirted with politics to draw heat for Sgt. Slaughter, The Truth Commission were beyond odd. Their gimmick was inspired by the real-life South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, a post-Apartheid restorative justice body created to investigate human rights violations perpetrated under the Apartheid regime. Controversially, they had the power to grant amnesty to perpetrators who made truthful and complete confessions to the commission.
How did this work in the world of wrestling? It really didn’t.
The stable began in USWA and was initially led by The Commandant, played by South African actor Robin B. Smith. However, upon their transition to WWE, a trained wrestler was preferred. Group member The Jackyl (Don Callis) took the reins.
Under the leadership of The Jackyl, the group floundered, with the leader often dishing out slaps, insults, and beatdowns from The Interrogator, to Sniper and Recon following their frequent losses. The duo soon left the commission and the WWE.
The Jackyl continued to manage Kurrgan (The Interrogator), bringing him into his new stable The Oddities, a collection of “freaks”, who were still a better fit in the wrestling world than the commission.
