10 Weirdest Wrestling Moments That Were SO CLOSE To Happening
Incest, racism, drag queens, illegitimate children and more wild WWE plans.
Most wrestling fans have heard the infamous tale of 'Baron Von Bava'.
Ex-WWE writer Dan Madigan's frankly bizarre 2004 pitch for a cryogenically frozen Nazi warrior stunned Vince McMahon into silence (stunned Vince McMahon into silence!), but it was never actually that close to happening. The boss hated the idea instantly, and so it was dead from day one.
Don't worry, because Reddit users have been discussing other wild moments, pitches and ideas that almost did see the light of day on television. McMahon himself has cast the creative net into crazy waters more than once - one sordid pitch in particular stands out from the rest, and it'll come as no surprise to some that it earned the top spot on this list.
Brace yourselves, people.
Other weird nearly moments include female stars being outed as men, NXT stars becoming white supremacists, pop stars slaying a promising heel faction, doppelgängers replacing the gimmicks they're doppelgäng-ing and more.
Yes, WWE is often on a one-company mission to offend everybody. Read this and you'll think, 'Thank God they didn't happen in the end'. Some of these could've been a total PR disaster...
10. Bret Hart Returns…In 2002
First, something innocent and fun but nonetheless still controversial.
Kurt Angle revealed via his podcast that WWE had two distinct visions for his role at WrestleMania X8. One was to wrestle an incoming Sting, which would've been special and preceded the WCW icon's run in TNA. The second was...somehow even bigger than that.
Angle went out of his way to contact Bret Hart and find out if the jaded legend would be interested in hauling on the pink and black tights for a technical dream match with him at 'Mania. Sadly, the 'Hitman' (who hadn't wrestled for over two years by that point thanks to his career-ending head injuries) wasn't game for it.
Bret would eventually return to the WWE fold for some DVD and Hall Of Fame business between 2005-2006. Then, he'd come back for some ill-advised matches in 2010. It's insane to think that he almost wrestled Kurt freakin' Angle less than five years after the 'Montreal Screwjob'.
