10 Words That Only Exist Because Of Wrestling

1. Smackdown

Without question the most famous entry on this list, Merriam-Webster's induction of the word 'smackdown' into the English speaking dictionary in July of 2007 was such an achievement for WWE and of course The Rock that it gathered a fair bit of worldwide press! Defined officially as "the act of knocking down or bringing down an opponent" and "a decisive defeat", The Rock's first recognised use of the word is credited to 1997, at the beginning of his Nation of Domination days. The Rock's immense popularity and charisma in 1999 led to WWE naming their second weekly show after the word and the following years saw THQ's profits soar with the WWE Smackdown! video game series. If for nothing else, 'smackdown' is testament to The Rock's remarkable achievement in evolving from professional wrestling into a mainstream worldwide superstar. The Rock can legitimately claim to have created a new word in the English language and considering pro-wrestling is still very much a niche industry, that is quite the accomplishment.
