6. Kwang

Kwang was Juan 'Savio Vega' Rivera's first gimmick in the World Wrestling Federation, which debuted to very little fanfare in the dark days of 1995.

During its mercifully brief run, before Rivera was repackaged as Razor Ramon's childhood friend, the masked Kwang character would employ an array of martial arts moves before dancing in some ceremonial fashion and spraying the dreaded coloured mist. A half-baked attempt at ripping off the Great Muta and Hayabusa, Kwang was a typically trite WWF creation.

His theme music was of the stock oriental variety, replete with bamboo flutes and gongs, as if the other eastern cliches weren't enough to hammer you over the head with the message that you are watching a wrestler from the far east. This gimmick would have been a caricature had it been portrayed by an Asian or Asian American grappler - that it was played by the Puerto Rican Rivera was beyond insulting.

We'd hope not, but given WWE's track record in this respect, we suspect Kwang was so named due to its onomatopoeic association with stereotypical kung fu noises.

Rivera was by no means the only wrestler asked to distastefully appropriate another culture...
