5. Booker T Does The Job

At WrestleMania 19, it took three Rock Bottoms for The Rock to beat Steve Austin. It took three F5s for Brock Lesnar to pick up the win against Kurt Angle, but one almighty Pedigree from Triple H was enough to seal the fate of Booker T in the biggest match of his life.

Wrestling doesn’t have a very good history of delving into race related storylines, and the Booker vs. Hunter angle certainly had racial overtones surrounding it. As you could have guessed, it didn’t go well. Hunter took a shot at the former WCW star saying “people like you” didn’t get to hold the Heavyweight Championship. People like you? What else but the color of his skin could he have been referring to?

Alright, so the set up was scummy, but having Booker T actually beat the hell out of Hunter and win the Title would have been a satisfying finish to the angle. Except it didn’t happen. Their match at WrestleMania XIX was fine, maybe a little underwhelming, but not terrible. At least it wasn’t until the finish. Hunter hit a Pedigree, but was so exhausted he couldn’t make the cover.

Now, in basically every other match in wrestling history, that spot has been used to set up the opponent dramatically kicking out and continuing the match. Not that night. After hitting his finisher, it took Hunter over 20 seconds to go for the pinfall, and yet it was enough to pick up the win.

It was a deflating ending to the feud, and a shockingly bad decision by management. It took years for Booker to recover, but even then he was never treated seriously as a top act again.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
