Yeah. You knew this one was coming.

Just so we’re all caught up: the Great Khali is terrible, was terrible, and will always be terrible. WWE likely well and truly knew this by the time he won the World Heavyweight Championship in the summer of 2007 on an episode of SmackDown. So why the heck did they do it?

More than likely, this decision can be owed to a defeatist attitude. At the time, Edge, the top heel on SmackDown, had to vacate the world title due to injury, and so while he was out, WWE needed something to do with the belt. By this point, it seemed clear WWE knew Khali emphatically could not wrestle, and so before he lost his final gasp of credibility, they figured they’d squeeze what they could out of a title reign.

Was it a meaningful, enjoyable reign nonetheless? Of course not. He had terrible matches with Batista before dropping it at Unforgiven, and not long after, Khali lost all relevance. It was a waste of time for everyone involved and just plain should not have happened.
