10 Worst WWE Booking Decisions Of The '90s (Year-By-Year)

5. 1995: Mabel Wins King Of The Ring

Speaking of Mabel, it says a lot about WWE’s creative woes at the time when, in a King Of The Ring tournament that featured Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker, it was Mabel who would win, including earning a clean pinfall win over ‘Taker in the process. Dark times, to be sure. Nelson Frazier was evidently a nice guy and a hard worker, but even a cursory glance at him should signify to any knowing fan that he should have been nowhere near the main event scene. That sentiment was justified as both Kevin Nash and The Undertaker suffered injuries working with a man of Mabel's weight.

Obviously, the decision was completely tarnished by the live crowd (including the famous "ECW" chants), and when the time came for “King” Mabel to face Diesel for the title at SummerSlam, Vince knew he had royally screwed up. The show did a terrible buyrate, and the match itself was so bad, Vince evidently realized then and there that the Diesel experiment needed to end, deciding to take the belt off him come Survivor Series.

Maybe, ultimately, that makes this decision a good thing, as it was the catalyst for Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels to reclaim the top spots in the company. Still though, talk about a messy way of getting there.
