They tried. They really, really tried.

Charlotte and Sasha Banks should not shoulder the majority of the blame for their passable Hell In A Cell 2016 show-closer not quite managing to live up to WWE's insane overblown hype job.

Make no mistake, it was an enormous deal that the two ferociously talented females were selected as the first in their gender to ever conclude a WWE pay-per-view (with Sasha and Bayley having already done so in NXT a year earlier).

However, the company had already squeezed far too much juice out of the fruit long before they arrived at the October pay-per-view in Banks' hometown of Boston, Massachusetts. Hotshotting the title in a foreshadowing of how reckless they'd be with the belt for the next several months, Sasha scooped the prize twice in blockbuster Monday Night Raw encounters in between Charlotte stealing the gold back at SummerSlam.

Worryingly, the matches were getting progressively worse, with much of their chemistry coming from Banks' gripping first title chase. Furthermore, booking her as a multi-time loser had significantly harmed the 'Boss' persona, and her diminutive size unfortunately meant that table bumps and other Cell high spots fell a little flat.

The result? A good-not-great match that ended with a whimper as Charlotte took back her prize to further a undefeated story arc they eventually blew the end of six months later.
