10 Worst WWE Pay-Per-View Names Ever

8. WrestleMania X-Seven

WrestleMania is a ridiculous name if you aren't a wrestling fan.

To those in love with the business it is the holy grail, and it is also a pretty foolproof one when it comes to annual name upgrades. It is the Super Bowl of professional wrestling, after all, and with each added number WrestleMania grabs a little more prestige and a little more history.

The beginning of the new millennium was an extremely sad time for grammar and naming, with plurals ending with the letter 'z' and all sorts of 'edgy' trends taking form. WrestleMania fell prey to this ridiculousness three years running, and instead of WrestleMania's XVI, XVII and XVIII we were given 2000, X-Seven and X8. All three become more embarrassing with each passing year.

To a certain degree WrestleMania 2000 can be forgiven, as the new millennium was such a big deal that cashing in on that made a lot of sense. All sorts of pop cultural institutions took on 2000, so why not WrestleMania? X8 could also be forgiven to a degree, as aesthetically it was relatively pleasing and smooth - and could even be interpreted as the amalgamation of tradition and modernity.

But X-Seven? Not only did it bastardise the Roman numeral norm, it also eschewed the digit in favour of the word itself. To traditionalists it was heresy and to younger people it was just lame, a clear and desperate ploy to appeal to a market that didn't really exist.

WrestleMania X-Seven turned out to be the greatest WrestleMania of all time, but until it is bettered the memory of the terrible name will persist.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
