5. Sable

Make no mistake about it, Sable absolutely should have been the Women's Champion at the height of her popularity in 1998. She was the top female performer in the industry, a recognizable star outside of it and someone who stood side by side with Steve Austin, Mankind, Undertaker, Kane and Rock as the biggest personalities of the Attitude Era. When WWE reintroduced the Women's Title to its programming, it did so with the sole intention being to crown her as the top female in the business. Unfortunately, there were really no plans for the title after Sable won it. A few matches with Jacqueline would follow, and a win over Ivory was little more than a plot device for the newcomer's rivalry with the Pretty Mean Sisters. Even her angle with Tori felt more like a lazy attempt at a Single White Female storyline than any legit opportunity for Sable to strengthen her legacy as champion. With her ego spiralling out of control, she lost the title to Debra in an Evening Gown match. An Evening Gown match that she freaking won, by the way. Think about that for a moment. The Sable experiment was going south at such an alarming rate that the company manipulated a way to take the title off of her despite her winning a match. It was essentially the end of Sable's stint with the company and a low point in the history of the Women's Championship.
