10 WrestleMania Main Events The Royal Rumble Almost Promised Us

8. Bret Hart Vs. The British Bulldog (WrestleMania XI)

1995 is renowned for a being a difficult time for WWE. There have literally been books written about the subject, and here I’m going to add another blemish on ‘95’s record in the form of a WrestleMania event that never was.

While Lawrence Taylor vs. Bam Bam Bigelow closed WrestleMania XI, the WWF title bout featured a Kliq-tastic meeting between Diesel and Shawn Michaels. Somewhere in another universe though, those spots could easily have been taken by Bret Hart and his brother-in-law, the British Bulldog.

The Bulldog had in fact come within a whisker of winning the Rumble match himself. Having tossed Michaels over the top rope, he turned to the corner in celebration. Unbeknownst to him though, Michaels had actually managed to hold on and would pull himself back into the ring before eliminating the unsuspecting Bulldog.

Meanwhile, Bret, the second part of this equation, had earlier come just as close to overcoming Diesel and leaving the PPV as WWF Champion, meaning that it would only have taken a couple of very slight amendments to turn this Bret vs. Bulldog match into a reality.

Ultimately, the two did end up clashing that year, at In Your House 5: Season’s Beatings, in a match that was arguably better than anything mustered up on that WrestleMania XI card.
