10 WrestleMania Matches History Deprived Us Of (That Weren't Actually Impossible)
5. Bret Hart Vs. Randy Savage - WrestleMania IX
It's astonishing to recall, when thrashing the decayed horse that is WrestleMania IX, that the ring was populated by the putrid likes of Crush and Giant Gonzalez - and yet, a still-game and still-brilliant Randy Savage was positioned, despite his protests, behind the commentary table.
McMahon wanted to usher in the new generation, a catchphrase he formalised under a year later, which was odd given that WWWF stalwart Bob Backlund propped up on the undercard and 1980s top face Hulk Hogan was despatched to steal Bret Hart's limelight in the main event. Incidentally, that New Generation was christened at King Of The Ring 1994 - an event headlined by Roddy Piper and Jerry Lawler.
Savage was closer to the end of his peak than many refuse to this day to acknowledge, but the man propelled Diamond Dallas Page into the headline ranks a full four years later with a spate of selfless and dynamite performances. He was demonstrably still capable of doing an immaculate job - and what an athletic masterclass of a match Savage Vs. Hart could have been.
It could have hastened Hart's acceptance as a true headline act, but as the depressing climax in Las Vegas confirmed, McMahon was still firmly stuck in the past.
