10 WrestleMania Results That Made Absolutely No Sense

4. Triple H Defeats Sting - WrestleMania XXXI

I truly believe that in the years to come, WWE's booking of Sting's first steps in the company will go down as some of the most questionable in company history. They got the debut right with his appearance at Survivor Series as a vigilante character, writing the wrongs continually committed by Triple H and The Authority. Things started to go wrong when the story was developed into a final battle between WCW and WWE. At this point the former had been defunct for fourteen years, and even during the heyday of the company Sting wasn't booked as a defender of truth for WCW, but more a disappointed individual outside of the WCW/nWo battle. When Sting finally spoke, he even stated that he wasn't fighting for WCW, despite the constant insistence from the McMahon-Helmsley Empire that he was. All of which led to a battle between Sting and Triple H at WrestleMania, Sting's first official match in World Wrestling Entertainment. The match itself was quite a fun little schmozz, with nostalgic (and nonsensical) interference from D-Generation X and the New World Order. Sting managed to snap Hunter's sledgehammer in half with what one can only assume is a magical baseball bat. Surely the hero would take home the win, keeping him credible for any and all future matches? Nope, Triple H hammered him into oblivion and claimed the victory. What makes everything worse is that the two then shared a handshake in the middle of the ring after the match, for absolutely no reason whatsoever. One year on, this decision still makes little sense.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
