10 Wrestlers Who Brought Their Gimmicks To WWE

6. Jerry "The King" Lawler

In the early days of his career, Jerry Lawler would win the National Wrestling Alliance Southern Heavyweight Championship, and with it, the title of "The King of Wrestling." Lawler took the title to heart, appearing with a crown and a kingly jacket as he began going by "Jerry 'The King' Lawler," which is admittedly a bit less of a mouthful. From that day in mid-1974, he carried the gimmick forth, including to his WWF debut in 1992. There, his title and gimmick would play into his first feud when he interrupted Bret "The Hitman" Hart's coronation as the 1993 King of the Ring tournament winner as he claimed he was the only true king in the World Wrestling Federation. Interestingly enough, the villainous Lawler would be seen as a good guy in his hometown federation of the United States Wrestling Association, which was also something of a training ground and talent exchange for WWF stars, and Vince McMahon occasionally appeared a well, much to the disdain of the crowd. Incidentally, the "playing face to the hometown crowd" duality of characters would come up again later when Bret and The Hart Foundation would belittle American wrestling fans, who naturally booed them as they received cheers abroad. These days, however, both Bret and Lawler are widely regarded as good guys around the world, while Vince... well, is Vince.
