10 Wrestlers EVERYBODY Was Wrong About

9. Sid

Braun Strowman
WWE

In 1993, readers of Dave Meltzer's Wrestling Observer absolutely stuck the boot into WCW's Sid Vicious. In the newsletter's annual awards, not only did the big man from Arkansas poll second in the clunkily title 'Most Unimproved Wrestler' (least improved, Dave) - behind Rick Rude, oddly - but he also scooped the dubious Most Overrated and Least Favourite Wrestler gongs. Only Dave 'The Equalizer' Sullivan and Giant González could prevent him bagging Worst Wrestler and a clean sweep of ignominy.

Now, there's some relevant context for this enmity. Months prior to the ballot being drawn, Sid and Arn Anderson infamously ran at each other with scissors during the Blackburn, England stop of WCW's European Tour. Although not exactly a prototypical Misawa in Atlanta, Sid's in-ring performances weren't quite wretched enough to inspire such loathing; attempting to deflate Double A with 20 puncture wounds probably was.

Sid would inevitably resurface in WWF following his release - what's a stabbing when the man's that tall - and after dossing around in Ted DiBiase's dreadful Corporation, soon found himself as the natural big man bête noir to flailing champ Shawn Michaels. The idea was for the struggling babyface to inspire the audience with babyface fire. Instead, the maturing crowd simply cheered for Sid instead. People had finally realised: Sid was f*cking mint. Just look at him! How could anybody not like Sid?

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
