Edge told a story on his Inside The Ropes tour a few years back.

Much like everybody else, he was mystified by the content of his vignettes. He didn't know why he was angry and running amok with his abs out in assorted bleak places. He did know that, irrespective of what he was doing, the investment in his character meant something at least.

In a wild subversion of that, getting the vignette treatment in WWE is ominous in 2022.

Aleister Black's 'Dark Father' gimmick went several weeks, in which a unique graphic novel art style provided a glimpse into his new persona. He got binned after one (1) live appearance. The same department was used to promote Xia Li's 'Protector' character, and she has made only a handful of appearances since. Why bother?

She defeated Natalya on SmackDown in February, which A) rendered the Aaliyah run meaningless and B) meant nothing in itself, since it has been strongly hinted that Natalya is set for the Gauntlet alongside Shayna Baszler.

Losing matches gets you on the 'Mania card, and winning is immaterial. Don't you get it?

Eric Bischoff think this is storytelling, and he was actually in the business, so he must be right!
