10 Wrestlers Reveal The Worst Matches Of Their Career
2. Stone Cold Steve Austin
Stone Cold Steve Austin wrestled a decade worth of matches and icons in the '90s/early '00s. He’s gone against The Rock, Kurt Angle, Ric Flair, The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart and many others. But the one encounter with a wrestling icon that he’d like to erase was against Sting.
Austin vs. Sting is considered a dream bout amongst wrestling fans, especially when Austin was on top in WWF and Sting ran WCW. Sadly, their paths never crossed when they were in their primes, but they have took on each other before, when Austin performed as ‘Stunning’ Steve Austin in WCW. Like Jeff Hardy not believing he lived up to his own expectations when he took on his hero Sting 20 years later in TNA, Austin felt the same about his own performance when he clashed with Sting in WCW. Austin explained on his podcast:
“Sting and I had many matches together. I remember back down when I worked in WCW, you know I was coming up the ranks. I was a great mechanic in the ring and I got the chance to have several matches with Sting. Sting back in the day was absolutely on fire, the fans flocked to him and he had a great gimmick and appearance. We went out to some show one day and for some reason, I called every match I had with Sting, and for some reason I just called the biggest turd I’d ever called. In the history of pro wrestling, that was probably my worst match.”
Austin remains confused to this day why the match ended up being as dire as it did, especially given the usual in-ring calibre of Sting:
“The thing about having a bad match with someone that is so over is it’s almost seemingly a fail-safe environment. You cannot fail because you’re working with someone that is so over. After the match you go and thank the guy you just worked with and poor Sting walked up to me and he just shook his head. He said ‘God damn Steve, what happened?’ I said I was very sorry and that it wouldn’t happen again.”
Austin said no matter how experienced you are in the ring technically, sometimes things just don’t go your way:
“It was one of those things where you just have a bad day in general and a bad day at the office. You can’t do anything right. You see it on Monday Night Football or any football game, sometimes you have a bad day and that was completely my fault.”
Does anyone else feel sorry for Sting that legends like Jeff Hardy, Jake Roberts and Steve Austin think the worst they were ever in the ring was against him?
