10 Wrestlers Who Are The Most Overrated At Precisely One Thing
5. Austin Theory: Being The Next Big Thing
Framing a talent as the next big thing is an almost pointlessly cruel booking trope.
Instantly, the booker is telling and not showing the story beat, and the talent must immediately embody the characteristics of a megastar to stand a chance of pulling off the role.
Has it even happened once?
Brock Lesnar was handed that literal title, but nobody bought it until he actually evolved into a special talent. Randy Orton's early push while slightly less on-the-nose also struggled because Vince McMahon, desperate to restore the glory days, was too insistent about it. Drew McIntyre bombed so badly as the 'Chosen One' early in his career that his resurgence was built around it in a meta spot of character development.
And now, Austin Theory is the latest character to be saddled with the tag. Is he really the future face of WWE?
In a very literal sense, yes, because he has what they have always looked for. He's tall, cut and telegenic. He's more than capable of reciting arrogant heel material in a smooth way. If you built Vince McMahon's ideal of a sports entertainer from the ground up, he'd look like Austin Theory - and that's the problem. He's a 7 at everything, lacks true charisma, and has a midcard quality that cannot be shaken.
And, in an era where we no longer have to endure Vince's oppressive tastes, it's all the easier not to fall for it.
