10 Wrestlers Who Couldn’t Legally Wrestle!

1. Bret Hart

Bret Hart was another wrestler tied into the Lloyd’s of London insurance policy.

Bret had to walk away from wrestling in 2000 after Goldberg mule kicked him into retirement at WCW Starrcade 1999, with him later suffering a stroke after falling off his bike. Lloyd’s of London were sceptical of the severe concussion he received in his match with Goldberg, having been taken advantage of years prior with Road Warrior Animal and Curt Hennig claiming they suffered career-ending injuries only to return to full-time competition years later. So Bret sued Lloyd’s in 2004 for unpaid benefits and breach of contract, which he won the following year. A big issue arose when Bret made his long-awaited return to the WWE in 2010, with WWE keen on presenting a match/angle hybrid where Bret would take on Vince McMahon at WrestleMania to seek revenge for the Montreal Screwjob.

Lloyd’s of London became involved when the match was close to being announced, curious of how Bret could compete in a match after suffering career-ceasing injuries. WWE were even willing to book Bret in a tag match with John Cena against Vince and Batista on the night, if it made circumstances easier.

WWE, Bret and Lloyd’s of London came to an agreement where a No Holds Barred Lumberjack match between Bret and Vince was allowed to go ahead at WrestleMania XXVI, with Bret having to no bumps, which was obvious when he wrestled in less than ideal matches in 2010 and 2011.
