One of the most polarising figures in modern wrestling history, Joanie 'Chyna' Laurer passed away in April. A former bodybuilder, she started training at Killer Kowalski’s wrestling school in 1995, and met with WWE’s Shawn Michaels and Triple H a year later. She was eventually brought to WWE in 1997, initially serving as D-Generation X’s bodyguard, before transitioning to a more prominent role.

Chyna broke ground as a female competitor who was legitimately capable of mixing it up with her male counterparts. Though never the most refined in-ring competitor, Chyna was an imposing, muscular performer who became a two-time Intercontinental Champion throughout her run, and held the Women’s Championship for 214 days in 2001.

Sadly, controversy followed Chyna throughout her life. She famously dated Triple H from 1996 to 2000, and was always blighted with accusations of sleeping her way to the top. There’s still some debate as to whether or not Triple H started his current relationship with Stephanie McMahon while still dating Chyna, but the Ninth Wonder of the World blamed the power couple for politicking her 2001 release, and she and the company were never able to mend their rift.

Her tumultuous personal life is well-documented at this point, but while her problems definitely overshadow her legacy, Chyna was an incredibly popular performer at her peak. She completely redefined the way women could be used as in-ring performers, and while Chyna left WWE on horrendous terms, many feel her rightful place lies in the company’s Hall of Fame.
