10 Wrestlers Who DOUBLED DOWN On Legendary Title Reigns
6. Randy Savage
The Intercontinental Championship is currently undergoing restoration efforts by GUNTHER, but it experienced its initial peak in the mid-eighties with the reign of Randy Savage.
Savage put the IC title on the map at the same time as Hulk Hogan's painfully dull WWE Championship run. Across 414 days, he defended the title against quite literally everyone, seeing off challenges from Golden Era mid-card staples such as Tito Santana and Jake Roberts to the lowliest of jobbers.
His most acclaimed defence, of course, saw him toppled by Ricky Steamboat in their preeminent WrestleMania III classic. 'The Macho Man' and 'The Dragon' made love to the canvas, making proficient use of exquisite chain wrestling throughout the first truly great 'Mania match.
Dropping the Intercontinental Championship proved beneficial for Savage, allowing him to enter the main event scene as he sat atop the company by the following year's WrestleMania as WWE Champion. Like future holders of the belt, Savage's sprint on top was marred by Vince McMahon favouring the already-made megastar - Hulk Hogan - who overshadowed his entire run.
Before his reign was Hulk Hoganised, though, look to his two Steel Cage matches vs. Ted DiBiase as proof of Randy Savage's competence as WWE Champion. It's a reign that deserves to be mentioned as one of the belt's greatest year-long arcs.
