10 Wrestlers Who Killed Their Own Push

3. William Regal

If wrestling was a fair and just business where a wrestler's success is determined on skill alone, William Regal would have retired as a multi-time World Champion. A sublime technician and excellent talker, the Englishman had all the tools required to become a top superstar, but ultimately saw his prospects diminished through a long streak of personal issues.

His biggest missed opportunity came in 2008. As Raw’s General Manager, Regal won the 2008 King Of The Ring tournament, and immediately became one of the brand’s top heels. Finally, after years of struggle, the wrestler born Darren Matthews was set to become one of WWE’s most powerful onscreen characters, and there was even word that he was due for a WWE Championship run.

The run was derailed when Regal was suspended for 60 days following his second Wellness Policy violation, however. This information was made public two days after he'd lost a "loser leaves WWE" match to Mr. Kennedy, and his late-career hopes were dashed.

The push was dead in the water, and Regal returned to his old midcard role upon return, never looking like a true contender again.
