When Mick Foley’s in-ring career wound down in 2007/2008, rather than leave WWE he took on a new role as a commentator. Though this move seemed natural for the charismatic and knowledgeable Foley, Vince McMahon pushed him to his limits during his time behind the commentary desk.

Despite Foley being a gifted talker, speaking on book tours, being interviewed thousands of times, and performing stand-up comedy, McMahon didn’t have enough trust in Foley on commentary. After being harangued by McMahon, Foley recalled the moment he snapped:

“When I returned to WWE [in 2011], [Layla] was cowering, backing away — she was terrified of me. She said I was the meanest person she had ever seen based on one interaction she observed with me and Mr. McMahon where I did not take well to being cursed at on the headset. She just happened to be there when I just snapped [at McMahon] and said, ‘I don’t care who you are or how much you’re worth, you’re not gonna talk to me that way ever again’.”

In the wake of the fallout, Foley signed with TNA and returned to in ring action. In retrospect this was another regret. Foley concluded:

“I would have liked to have been considered a good investment that Dixie Carter made. I don’t think that she or I would think that the investment they put into me paid off for them. I think I could have contributed more and in a better way, but it did not work out that way.”
