History is a peculiar thing. Time can often skew our perception of something's significance, and the in-ring career of Trish Stratus is one such thing. Pro wrestling now likes to look back at Stratus and sigh, to talk about how she was ahead of her time and how she is the true flag-bearer for what eventually became the women's revolution.

Her legacy is undoubtedly exaggerated, but this fitness model turned wrestling champion was groundbreaking nonetheless.

It is easy to forget that she was just 30 years old when she retired. Her in-ring career lasted just six years. Trish retired on top, defeating Lita for the WWE Women's Championship in her final match in her hometown. The 'Queen of Queens' had a lot more to offer, but going out on top is hard to argue with.

Trish entered the WWE when women were seen as eye candy and little else. Trish herself was signed on the back of a successful career as a fitness model, but she overcame what was expected of her to become one of the finest in-ring competitors in her division. Maybe her legacy isn't so exaggerated after all...

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
