Stone Cold's refusal to risk his health by stepping back in the ring meant that wrestling fans were denied one major all-time dream match - Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. CM Punk. Every wrestling fan knew in their heart of hearts that the match wasn't going to happen, but the dreaming never stopped.

CM Punk's retirement from professional wrestling was unique. The 'Voice of the Voiceless' upped and left the business on his own terms, primarily because of his utter dismay at the direction the WWE product was moving in. The prospect of Batista vs. Randy Orton headlining WrestleMania XXX was the final straw.

Much has been written about CM Punk's early retirement, but instead of dirty gossip and speculation it may well be best to think of what could have been. CM Punk vs. AJ Styles in a WWE ring, Punk vs. Shinsuke Nakamura, Punk feuding with a returning Kurt Angle, CM Punk and Jinder Mahal - just a few of the many confrontations we missed.

Some fans may hold out hope of CM Punk returning to professional wrestling at some point in the future - those fans are going to be disappointed

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
