10 Wrestlers Who Were Way Ahead Of Their Time

6. Sabu

Let's be clear, the Suicidal, Homicidal, Genocidal, Death-Defying Sabu didn't invent high-flying wrestler or hardcore wrestling. What he was was the first to truly merge the two, executing moonsaults through tables and launching himself off chairs onto his competitors with another chair in hand. Without Sabu, it is unlikely that men like Jeff Hardy would have gained such prominence in pro wrestling.

Sabu could also be considered the first true star of the independent wrestling scene. He was wrestling's best-kept secret for a while, the oft-whispered about star of traded tapes and match recommendations. The Human Highlight Reel made a name for himself outside of the two major companies and became a huge star in the process.

CM Punk, Jeff Hardy, Rob Van Dam and others can thank Sabu for opening the door years and years ago.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
