Kazuchika Okada and Kenny Omega have drawn major attention for their two six-star bouts in 2017, but Meltzer has gone outwith his rating system to praise a bout's flawlessness before. Ricky Steamboat and Ric Flair were the first to inspire this move: an NWA house show match between the two earned an unprecedented ****** rating in March 1989, but it isn't even most famous bout they had together.

Taking place over three months from February 1989 onward, Flair & Steamboat's televised trilogy should be considered essential viewing for any wrestling fan. Each was awarded the full five, marking 'The Dragon' as 'The Nature Boy's' best opponent, though Flair also scored ***** honours for three matches with Barry Windham throughout 1986 and 1987.

Steamboat and Windham account for seven of Flair's nine top-rated matches. A 1989 bout with Terry Funk concludes his collection of five-star singles contests, with his participation in the WrestleWar 1991 War Games bout standing as the last ***** rating of Ric's career. He is the only American wrestler to ever reach this incredible tally, with Windham and Steamboat lagging behind at five a piece.
