5. The Real Reason Nigel McGuinness Retired

Here is a strange case of a wrestler offering the real answer years later on multiple occasions.

2024 saw the in-ring return of British wrestling legend Nigel McGuinness at AEW All In.

For the longest time, though, it felt like another hard-hitting performance from the former ROH World Champion was never going to happen, with many assuming that his heath issues were keeping him away from the ring.

But after that aforementioned Casino Gauntlet appearance inside of Wembley Stadium, McGuinness finally set the record straight... again.

Speaking to TV Insider, the AEW commentator stated that the actual reason he stopped wrestling 13 years earlier wasn't because of concussions or Hepatitis B - McGuinness contracted the latter during his time in TNA - it was due to the fact he "couldn’t make a living as a wrestler anymore."

AEW wasn't a thing, WWE didn't want to sign him due to an arm injury (despite it being fully healed), he couldn't wrestle the ROH style anymore or make enough money there to even cover his health insurance, and he didn't want to return to TNA. So, he simply stopped wrestling and eventually turned his attention to commentating instead.

He actually explained that WWE not offering him a wrestler contract was the reason he retired a couple of years after said retirement in 2013, too, but folks still continued to believe he didn't wrestle due to the aforementioned medical issues.

The truth is, though, as McGuinness put it himself - and even noted in 2018 on Twitter/X - he "was perfectly okay to wrestle," it just took a decade or so for him to find the right situation to make his return.
