10 Wrestling Decision-Makers (And Their Biggest Mistakes)

10. Jim Herd

Jim HerdBiggest mistake: Attempting to destroy the Nature Boy. Although he was only involved in the wrestling business for only four years, from 1988-1992, during those four years he managed to do some severe damage to Jim Crockett Promotions, which eventually became WCW. Herd had never worked in the wrestling industry; yet someone believed that the man who was a former Pizza Hut manager and a St. Louis TV station would be a great wrestling booker. Some of his early disasters included the Ding Dongs (wrestlers who always wore bells), the Hunchbacks (who, because of their deformities, could not be physically pinned), and turning stiff, tough-as-nails Stan Hansen into a comedy gimmick. But his worst decision was his attempted destruction of the €˜Nature Boy€™ gimmick. Herd somehow believed that Ric Flair was past his prime and that he needed an entirely new gimmick, despite the ovation Flair received and his drawing power proving the opposite. Herd wanted Flair to cut his trademark bleach blonde hair and adopt the gimmick of a Roman Gladiator names Spartacus, because apparently the diehard NWA audience wanted to see that more than Flair€™s wrestling capabilities, at least according to Herd. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRHnhnCL3eQ Flair refused to do any of this, had multiple heated arguments with Herd, and eventually left WCW for WWF with the WCW World Title, leaving WCW without their most prestigious title. Months later, Herd was fired from WCW, preventing from destroying the legacies of any other great wrestlers from that period.
