10 Wrestling Facts We Didn't Know Last Week (July 6)
6. WCW Regularly Settled Lawsuits For $100,000
Sifting through the protective layer Eric Bischoff maintains is Conrad Thompson's job on the pair's 83 Weeks podcast.
Thompson does it well, and he managed to crack through on this week's episode. In between analysing the Goldberg vs. Hollywood Hogan WCW Title match on Nitro in July 1998, Conrad asked Bisch about WCW's approach to lawsuits.
To his credit, Eric answered candidly, and he revealed that Turner executives would routinely settle out of court for the same sum.
Whenever WCW were sued by ex-talent, they'd endeavour to tie things up quickly without going to court. According to Bischoff, the company would stall for a week or so to make it look like they were fighting. Then, as soon as they could, WCW would offer $100,000, reasoning that court fees could be much higher.
This is something Bischoff says happened "countless times" during his run with the organisation. It became something of a running joke with the locker room, and some jokingly encouraged others to sue WCW on their way out for an easy 100k.
