Before he left for WCW a second time, Jeff Jarrett had returned to the then-WWF in 1997. Seeking the opportunity to make an impact straight away, Jarrett planned out a promo with Vince Russo that would provoke the biggest star in the company, Steve Austin.

Russo told the story to the WrestlingInc Podcast, saying that Jeff decided to add in a line slating Austin for blasphemy related to the 'Austin 3:16' catchphrase. Accusing the anti-hero of using religion to make wads of cash, Jarrett legitimately angered a watching Austin. Standing beside 'The Rattlesnake' behind the curtain, Russo could see that the man was genuinely peeved.

Austin was beside himself, and couldn't wait for Jarrett to return backstage. Once he did, Austin tore into him and couldn't believe what had just happened. Watching on, Russo thought for sure that the pair would start fighting right there and then.

Things didn't come to that, but Austin was angry with Jarrett for not running the idea by him before he went out and said it publicly.
