The New Day have lost some of their shine since moving to SmackDown as part of the Superstar Shakeup earlier this year. Had initial plans gone ahead, they would have done so as heels. According to Big E on The Wrap, he, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods were supposed to turn back at Roadblock: End Of The Line.

After losing the Raw Tag-Team Titles to Sheamus and Cesaro on the December, 2016 pay-per-view, the fun-loving trio were pencilled in to assault their rivals and leave the show as villains. Somewhere along the line though, plans changed, and WWE's creative team decided to stick with New Day as cheerful babyfaces who played to the crowd.

In Big E's mind, that was a missed opportunity for the team to do something different. At the time, he believed the group was growing stale and needed something to spike interest. A heel turn would have done that, but it wasn't something the writers felt comfortable booking.
