1. Chris Jericho Thought WWE Wanted Him To Be The Goon
Chris Jericho's 'Talk Is Jericho' podcast is a real goldmine for all sorts of facts related to the man's career. One of the latest came out this week, when Jericho lifted the lid on discussions between the WWF and himself in 1996. Having worked for the man previously in Smoky Mountain Wrestling, Jericho was contacted by Jim Cornette. Cornette told the Canadian that the WWF wanted to bring in 5 new wrestlers to work under gimmicks as enhancement talent. They wouldn't exactly be TV jobbers, because they would be given a full entrance, as well as a previously-agreed character. Even so, they would be staring at the lights regularly for wrestlers the company were interested in pushing. Jericho wasn't interested, and actually later expressed fears that he would have been turned into 'The Goon'. Played by Bill Irwin, the hockey gimmick didn't last long. The Goon rarely won any matches, and he only had a brief run in the WWF. For Jericho, that kind of thing didn't appeal to him, because he knew his chance would come if he held his course.
