To this day, Bruce Prichard counts the original Doink The Clown character as one of his favourite gimmicks of all time. On his Something To Wrestle With podcast, Prichard revealed that the WWF had huge plans for Matt Borne in the role when he debuted. Doink wasn't supposed to be comedy relief. He was viewed as a title contender.

One story Bruce pitched was for a Doink The Clown vs. The Undertaker feud. This happened in 1993 right after WrestleMania IX's rivalry against Crush had ended. Prichard's plan was that the 'Double Doinks' would play mind games with 'Taker and Borne would become his chief rival. If only this had happened.

Keep in mind that Undertaker's lame feud with The Giant Gonzales continued into SummerSlam '93. Seeing Doink vs. 'Taker would have been much more interesting, but it wasn't to be. Somewhere along the line, the tentative plan was abolished, probably due to Borne's substance abuse problems.
