10 Wrestling Gimmick Matches You Won't See Again

5. Piñata On A Pole Match

By November 1999 WCW was on the losing side of the Monday Night Wars, with the signing of Vince Russo as the wonder weapon that was supposed to turn the advancing WWE away from the gates of Atlanta. While Russo's career is difficult to evaluate, the Piñata On A Pole match from Monday Nitro on November 15th is unlikely to be remembered as one of its better days at the office.

Russo (beginning his stint as an onscreen personality) offered a gaggle of WCW's luchador cruiserweights the opportunity to bag $10,000 if they could break open a piñata suspended from a pole at one corner of the ring. That sentence is enough to demonstrate why this match will not be coming back. Treating the heritage of Mexican wrestling as a joke for white people to chortle at isn't something that fits with the WWE brand, or with the basic function of a morally responsible human being.

Anything with a hint of negative racial or cultural stereotyping is radioactive even in the mentality of a wrestling world traditionally 20 years behind everyone else.
