Where to even start with fans' perception of John Cena?

In his early days, he was cheered as an ironic face with his white rapper gimmick. However, as he became the star of the company, those cheers quickly changed to boos and then full-on hatred for the man who many thought was poisoning wrestling.

The run that is credited with restoring fans' good will in Cena is his time with the United States Championship in 2015. After winning it from Rusev at WrestleMania 31, Big Match John began his open challenge, inviting anyone to fight him for the belt if they wanted to "come get some".

Challengers like Cesaro, Sami Zayn, and Kevin Owens would all answer the call, but the first man to accept the challenge was the current day Jon Moxley.

Cena vs Ambrose is fine, but nothing special. What's important is that this was a different side of John Cena, one who was willing to go out on TV every week and put on a great match with a younger talent.

This was a far cry from the star-crusher Cena was perceived as by many fans and his image would only improve as the open challenge era went on.
