10 Wrestling Moments That Shocked The World

5. Steve Austin Aligns With Mr. McMahon

At WrestleMania X-Seven, fans were treated to an almighty card. Not only did The Hardy Boyz, The Dudley Boyz and Edge and Christian tear the house down during their TLC bout, but Vince McMahon also faced his son Shane in a hard-hitting Street Fight. In the main event slot, Steve Austin challenged The Rock for the WWF Heavyweight Title. Virtually everyone was enthused for the bout, one which promised to top a match between the pair previously at 'Mania XV. The action itself didn't disappoint, but it was with the ending that all involved managed to bewilder both the live crowd and those watching at home. For the first time as the 'Stone Cold' character, Steve Austin turned heel, aligning himself with Mr. McMahon. Few watching could believe it when McMahon handed Austin a steel chair. Knocking The Rock silly with the weapon, Austin then won the WWF Title. After the bout, he shook hands with McMahon, who had been his main adversary for years. On commentary, Jim Ross yelled that Stone Cold was "shaking hands with the devil himself". The heel turn wouldn't work out great for Austin, but it was still a moment nobody saw coming.
