10 WWE Angles That Backfired Spectacularly
6. Stone Cold Goes Bad
One thing you can't say about Stone Cold's heel turn is that it was predictable. Ill-thought-out, maybe, but very few saw it coming, and it made for one of the most memorable climaxes in WrestleMania history as a result.
But therein lies the problem: the turn itself was pretty much the only good thing that came out of it. From that point forward everything the WWE writers tried to turn the fans against him spectacularly backfired.
From being teamed up with Triple H as part of the Two-Man Power Trip to joining Shane and Stephanie's Alliance in their bid to bring down the company, nothing seemed to work. He was just too damn likeable for anyone to truly hate.
And yet, making Austin a bad guy radically and irreparably altered the on-screen product, effectively bringing the curtain down on the Attitude Era, perhaps the biggest boom period wrestling will ever see.
