10 WWE Booking Steps To Make Big E A Megastar
5. The Diesel Spot
If you ask a lot of WWE fans what they would like to see Vince McMahon do with Big E in 2021, the answer would be to have him win a top singles championship at WrestleMania 37, after first securing a dominant victory in the Royal Rumble. But is that really what's best for business?
How about, instead of winning the match, Big E is instead given the so-called Diesel spot, named after Kevin Nash's dominant performance during the 1994 Royal Rumble match. Rather than winning the whole thing, WWE tends to allow one Superstar the opportunity to run roughshod over the others, throwing them out one by one and asserting themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the coming year.
This concept worked for Nash, it's worked for Braun Strowman at 2018's Greatest Royal Rumble, and it's worked for Kane and Roman Reigns in the regular PPV. There is no reason it couldn't work for Big E too, and just as it looks like he's on his way to the biggest win of his career, WWE pulls the rug from under him, testing the waters for just how much the fans are ready to get behind his mega-push.
