10 WWE Gimmick Reboots That Saved The Wrestler's Career

4. Dustin Rhodes To Goldust

It must be tough to be the son of a legend. Before Dustin Runnels ever stepped foot in a wrestling ring, he was already in the shadow of his father, "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes. Dustin, in his own right, was a solid wrestler, even from a young age. In late 1990, Dustin joined the WWF to team with his father against Ted Dibiase and Virgil, and after the 1991 Royal Rumble, both he and his father left the company. Dustin had a decent four-year run in WCW before returning to the WWF. When he came back in 1995, he was something else entirely. The Goldust character was years ahead of its time. Playing on the homophobic fears of the macho wrestlers (and wrestling fans), Goldust managed to be an effective heel, and his androgynous character was an early taste of what was to come in the Attitude Era. That more than 20 years later, Dustin Runnels is still in the WWE as the Goldust character is a testament to its staying power.
