It's been said that no other wrestler could have taken a character like The Undertaker and made it work. An undead zombie accompanied by a portly mortician could easily have been a short-lived flash in the pan had Mark Calaway not been the perfect man for the job. Just shy of 27 years on from his debut however, 'Taker is still held in high regard.

What exactly makes a great wrestling gimmick is hard to ascertain. If it was as simple as putting a character on any old wrestler, then guys like The Berzerker, Max Moon, and Mordecai might be spoken of more favourably. This outlines the importance of the wrestler behind the gimmick to the success of their character.

Bruce Prichard once claimed Terry Taylor's unwillingness to fully get behind the Red Rooster gimmick killed it dead. Though Taylor can't be blamed for turning his nose up at becoming wrestling poultry, Prichard has a point. Even gimmicks that seem horrible at first glance can be saved if the person playing that role embraces it...
