"Stand back, there's a Hurricane coming through!"

When Shane Helms transformed into goofy superhero The Hurricane in 2001, it completely changed the direction of his career. Meanwhile, fans were left wondering how Helms had managed to make such a ridiculous idea so entertaining. This was amidst the WCW 'Invasion' after all, a time that was supposed to be serious.

Through his own geeky love of comic books and over-the-top performances under the mask, Helms turned Hurricane from irritating heel to a babyface genuinely adored by the core audience. This was no easy task, and there's a case to argue that others would have floundered under the same circumstances.

To Helms, the character represented opportunity to become established in WWE. That was all the incentive he needed.
