10 WWE Gimmicks That Just Aren't Working

9. AJ Styles & Omos

To paraphrase Kevin Nash’s Chet Lemon alter ego, “One thing about Omos is he’s a big guy.”

Debuting on RAW Underground (remember that show? Neither does WWE), Omos was quickly revamped as AJ Styles’ trusty giant pal. Watching Styles’ back, the gargantuan bodyguard stood around for months looking menacing.

Come WrestleMania 37, the idea of Omos wrestling had been built up for so long that he enjoyed a massive pop when Styles tagged him in. In the months since, the Styles/Omos pairing hasn’t done much for either man.

On the one hand, the green as grass Omos still needs a lot of seasoning between the ropes. On the other, Styles is spending the closing years of his illustrious career languishing in the tag division. Many would like to see Styles work a dream program with Edge before it’s too late. A rivalry with current WWE champ Big E could also be fresh and exciting.

For now, the question of when Styles and Omos will split remains. The chances of them regaining the tag titles from the popular RK-Bro duo are slim to none. Should Omos turn on and beat Styles, the damage done to The Phenomenal One’s star power this year may lessen the impact.

If the opposite occurs and Omos falls to the former Bullet Club kingpin, then this whole run was essentially for nought. It’s a lose-lose situation that could’ve easily been avoided had Omos been given more time to train and Styles another shot in the limelight where he belongs.
