10 WWE Gimmicks That Just Aren't Working
5. Goldberg
Goldberg’s not done yet, his war with his lockerroom door will continue until one of them is no more.
It’s hard to believe for those born this millennium but Goldberg was once a star near the level of Stone Cold and The Rock. WCW fans couldn’t get enough of the guy. His intensity, strongman wrestling moves and undefeated streak turned him into a must-see beast in short order.
In 1999, Bill Goldberg was a superstar; a dangerous one as Bret Hart can attest, but super all the same. In 2021, he can do next to none of what made him such a monster attraction in his prime. Slow, exhausted and dangerously ill-equipped to carry out his signature moves, Goldberg is not convincing anymore.
His cumbersomely handled feud with Bobby Lashley summed up much of what is wrong with his character. Goldberg just sort of wanders in, requests an unearned title shot and then just sort of loses and doesn’t know what to do with himself.
While his rematch with Lashley at Crown Jewel was surprisingly great, it seemed more a testament to The All Mighty’s talents than big Bill’s. Out of fuel and sensible direction, there’s an argument to be made that Goldberg left these comebacks of his too late.
Perhaps a return to the peace of retired life would serve the Monday Nitro icon best at this point.
