10 WWE Gimmicks That Overstayed Their Welcome

Shane McMahon (March 10, 2019-October 4, 2019)

This was an accomplishment in itself, in that WWE somehow made a gimmick that ran for seven months feel like seven years.

In the Attitude Era, Shane McMahon, like the rest of the McMahon Family, toed the line of good and evil, floating between smarmy, spoiled rich kid from Connecticut and scrappy underdog that would put his body through absolute Hell. After an extensive leave of absence from 2010-2016, Shane O' Mac was welcomed back as the breath of fresh air alternative to his overexposed father and sister.

WWE's solution? Bring Shane up to speed.

For the next three years, Shane would enter several marquee matches against prime talent, which on the surface is inoffensive. Trouble is, we were meant to believe that Shane could not only hang with, but often outperform superstars 10-15 years his junior. After an injury angle forced him into the finals of the World Cup Tournament at Crown Jewel 2018, Shane of course claimed the trophy and the laughable distinction of "Best In The World".

The crescendo would be reached at Fastlane 2019 when WWE removed the last remaining likable McMahon from the board and made him an unbearable narcissist that demanded that he be hailed as "The Best In The World" during every introduction and relished every last second of breath he could extract from ring announcer Greg Hamilton. This went on for SEVEN MONTHS.

At least Greg Hamilton got a chance to show off the strength of his pipes, so that's something.
